WGBH's Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family National Center for Accessible Media has launched an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to raise money to build CADET, a caption authoring software which will enable anyone to easily and affordably produce high-quality caption files that are compatible with any media player on any web browser, and which can be readily uploaded to social media outlets.
Many are familiar with MAGpie, NCAM’s free captioning tool, first released in 2000. Thousands of users have downloaded MAGpie over the years, sharing their questions and support on a long-active listserv, proving that a simple Java application could help increase the number of captioned videos online. It has been more than five years since our team has made any modifications to the now outdated software.
CADET, the Caption and Description Editing Tool will implement much of the functionality available only in high-end caption authoring workstations, such as WYSIWYG placement, timing assistance, multiple export formats covering the most used timed-text file types, keyboard shortcuts, and other such features. Unlike other captioning tool creators, NCAM has a unique insight into the needs of caption writers, due to WGBH’s long history in creating captions and developing captioning tools. Other free or low-cost captioning applications are difficult to use because they were not designed by people with hands-on experience in caption-software development or caption writing; our developers have deep experience in the development of caption software for both broadcast and non-broadcast use.
Once completed, NCAM will release the CADET software to everyone, everywhere, free of charge. Your contribution will help fund access to online videos for millions of people.
Please visit our Indiegogo page to learn more about CADET and to offer your support, and help us to spread the word, sharing the campaign link with colleagues, peers, content-creators, potential users, and other interested parties. NCAM is eager to give this valuable gift to the world, but without funding, we can’t begin our work. Please help us to reach our goal by sharing your wisdom, our words and ideas, and your support in any form.
