DTV Access Project Releases Test Material to Industry
First in Planned Series from WGBH

WGBH's National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) today announced the initial release in a planned series of closed caption and descriptive narration test materials for the DTV industry.
The DTV Access Project's Test Disc 1.0 is intended to assist consumer and professional broadcast equipment manufacturers in the design of products implementing digital television services for people with sensory disabilities.
The CD-ROM includes an ATSC compliant transport stream containing
- a four-and-a-half minute segment of 1080i program material with stereo audio
- an alternate stereo audio track including a descriptive narration service for blind and visually impaired audiences
- EIA-608 (Line 21) compliant caption data
- English captions - decode to CC1 (Field 1)
- TV Cross-Over (Hyper) Links - decode to Text 2 (Field 1)
- Spanish captions - decode to CC3 (Field 2)
- Basic PSIP data
The disc also includes preliminary documentation and a user's guide.
Single copies of Test Disc 1.0 are available at no cost to qualified consumer and professional broadcast manufacturers. Multiple copies per company are available at a nominal charge.
Future releases will be available by subscription only. Expected features include extended PSIP data, and EIA-708 caption data and services.
