Access Instructions for Microsoft LIT E-books with Linked Multimedia

This e-book demonstrates the use of multimedia within the Microsoft LIT format. It contains a number of features to make it as accessible as possible to blind and visually impaired users.

Reading This E-book

Blind or visually impaired users may read this book using Microsoft Reader's text-to-speech (TTS) engine. For best results, turn on the TTS' verbosity feature. To activate verbosity:

  1. Press Alt+S to open the settings menu
  2. Press Alt+G to open the Go To menu
  3. Press O to go to voice settings
  4. Press the spacebar to turn on verbosity. You should hear Reader begin speaking.
  5. Press Alt+R to return to this e-book

You can now take advantage of all of Reader's TTS capabilities. Below is a list of basic functions.

  1. Read: Control+P
  2. Stop: Control+S
  3. Activate a link: Control+Enter
  4. Move forward or backward by word: right or left arrow
  5. Move forward or backward by sentence: Control+right arrow or Control+left arrow
  6. Move forward or backward by paragraph: Alt+right arrow or Alt+left arrow
  7. Move forward or backward by page: page up, page down
  8. Announce location: F5

Playing the Movie Clips

There are four movie clips linked from this e-book. Each movie will play in the stand-alone Windows Media Player, and each contains captions and extended audio descriptions. You can access the clips by selecting the links with Control+Enter when Reader is reading the link text aloud, or you can move forward or backward to position the cursor on the link and then press Control+Enter. Windows Media Player will begin playing the clip automatically upon connecting with the server.

Here is a brief list of keyboard commands for controlling the Windows Media Player's basic functions.

  • play/pause: Control+P
  • stop and go back to the beginning: Control+S
  • fast-forward: Control+Shift+F
  • rewind: Control+Shift+B
