Participation in Research

From the assessment, we will identify and contact a set of potential teacher/student pairs to participate in prototype evaluations. Participating teachers will receive a training session. The session will include training on the research protocol and an introduction to new technologies (MAGpie) available to make media accessible to blind and visually impaired students. We will ask you to schedule a two hour session with individual students for evaluation sessions at a convenient and familiar location to the student. During each session, we will employ two methods of gathering data on the effectiveness of the eDescription prototypes.

Total teacher participation time

Total teacher participation involves approximately 10 hours over a one-year period.

  1. a training session
  2. a one-hour student/teacher prototype evaluations
  3. a half-hour post-prototype evaluation interviews
  4. a meeting at WGBH of all professionals involved to gather feedback

You will receive a stipend and professional development points (PDP's) upon completion of the professional focus group meeting. This initial research phase will culminate in a thank you workshop. Students will be given a gift. You will secure parental permission and we will negotiate a mutually agreed upon classroom or resource room setting which is familiar to students. The Project will follow confidentiality standards for research, and will not release names of any participating students.

We hope you will join us in this Project. We expect that you will enjoy the opportunity to develop a better awareness of what your student gets out of the classroom materials, refine your verbal description skills, and learn more about new technologies and their potential use in the classroom.
