Closed Captioning University

The CPB/WGBH National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) developed Closed Captioning University (CC University) to help public television stations prepare for the increased demand for more captioning of local and instructional programming resulting from implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the TV Decoder Circuitry Act.

NCAM has held three sessions of CC University to date. All public television stations were invited to apply. Selected participants came to the state-of-the-art facilities of WGBH and The Caption Center in Boston for a week of free, hands-on training on how to establish an in-house captioning unit, including captioning styles and standards, encoding technology, equipment, new FCC specifications, hiring and recruiting practices, fundraising and outreach.
