Teletext and Subtitling: History and Technical Information

In the European community, and in many other countries as well, viewers may view written information on their television screens through two different services: teletext and subtitling (the latter being what Americans call "closed captions"). While these services operate independently of one another, they rely on the use of the same decoder in order to be seen by the viewer. (Note: For simplicity, "captions" and "subtitles" will be used interchangably in this report.)
