People with disabilities, parents, teachers and advocates are often the first source of information on assistive technology for a range of professionals-- everyone from engineers working on the latest video-on-demand technology to the local clerk at the neighborhood electronics store. This session briefed participants on the latest consumer technology, what is currently accessible and what can be improved, and what steps must be taken to make access a reality. Consumers and advocates are often at a loss as to how to increase the amount of accessible content offered by local providers. This session helped fill in those blanks, offered lists of media content providers (studios, stations, educational publishers, etc.), resources, sample materials to jump-start efforts, and models of effective coalition-building around the country that can be replicated with success here in Boston. This session explained how federal and state requirements affect educational media, and shared tips and techniques for requesting or making on-line learning materials, CD-ROMs, DVDs, electronic textbooks and other classroom media accessible. Participants also learned about the new format that textbook publishers must follow, the National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS).
