MAGpie 2 requires the installation of four applications. It is critical that you install items in the order indicated below.
Download and install the latest version of Java for your operating system [required]
OS X users may skip this step since Java is already installed with the OS X operating system.
- Download and install the latest version of Java for your operating system from http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
- Run the installer, accepting all defaults.
- You can verify the successful installation by opening a command prompt window and typing:java -version

Download and install QuickTime [required]
MAGpie requires QuickTime and the QuickTime Java component, which is automatically installed with the QuickTime Player.
- Download and install the latest version of QuickTime for your operating system from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ You do not need to purchase a QuickTime Pro license in order to perform basic captioning or description operations with MAGpie.
- Run the installer, accepting all defaults.
Download and install the Oratrix GRiNS Player for MAGpie [optional]
Currently there is no Java interface to the RealPlayer engine available for Mac OSX. The GRiNS player application is required if you wish to caption or describe media types supported by RealPlayer.
- The GRiNS installer is available at http://ncamftp.wgbh.org/magpie2/GRINSmagpie-123c.exe
- Run the GRiNS installer.
- During the installation of the GRiNS player, users must make sure that the Java framework for GRiNS is installed to the same location as the current version of the Java Runtime Edition installed previously. This location is likely to beC:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1_07\lib\extbut the version (1.3.1_07 in this example) may change depending on the version of the JRE installed on the system. The installer may install files (grinsp.dll and grinsp.jar) in an incorrect location if the system has the Java Software Development Kit (SDK) installed in addition to the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) — ensuring that the GRiNS Java framework is installed to the directory listed above will avoid potential problems.

Download and install MAGpie 2
Download locations:
- Windows: http://ncamftp.wgbh.org/magpie2/Mag2Inst-win-203.zip Unzip the installer archive and run the file Mag2Inst-win-203, accepting all defaults.
- OS X: http://ncamftp.wgbh.org/magpie2/Mag2Inst-osx-202.zip Run the installer, accepting all defaults.
Run MAGpie 2
Run MAGpie from the Start menu (Windows) or from the Applications folder (OS X). The splash screen will appear; after a few seconds it will be replaced by the editor.
NOTE FOR WINDOWS USERS: If the editor does not appear after the splash screen disappears, you must uninstall and reinstall QuickTime. Run MAGpie again and you will see the editor after the splash screen disappears.
NOTE FOR OS X USERS: On some Intel-based Macs, MAGpie doesn't successfully launch the correct version of the Java runtime. As a result, MAGpie will not run. This is due to a problem with the interaction of Java and the QuickTime library. NCAM is working to solve the problem and will upload a new installer when a solution has been reached.
Congratulations! MAGpie is now ready to use.
