Accessibility Features
MAGpie has been tested with JAWS versions 3.3, 3.3.1 and 3.5, and Window-Eyes
version 3.1 screen readers. Using JAWS configuration/frames or Window-Eyes set
files, both these screen readers will correctly voice most of the screen
contents in MAGpie. These files are included in the MAGINST.ZIP package. If you are
using JAWS, install the configuration and frames files MAGPIE.JCF and
MAGPIE.JFF in the JFWxx\SETTINGS\ENU folder (where JFWxx = your version of JAWS). If
you are using Window-Eyes, install the set file MAGPIE.000 in the WINEYES folder.
Note: These files have been created to work with a screen resolution of
800x600. If your screen resolution is different, the files may not work correctly.
MAGpie makes use of two windows: the editing grid and the media player. The
layout of the editing grid is divided into two parts. The upper portion is
called the header and is divided into two sections, left and right. The left
section contains field names with the following text already embedded in them:
Title
Copyright
Stream Type
Language
Country
Comments
The right section is where you enter values for each field. Information in
the header is for reference purposes only and is not displayed as captions.
Below the header, the grid is divided into three columns. If you are in
Caption mode, the column names are Timecode, Speaker and Caption. If you are in
Audio Description mode, the column names are Timecode, Audio File and
Narration/Notes. Enter the appropriate information into these cells as described in the
instructions for Section I, "Captions and Subtitles" or Section II, "Audio Descriptions.î
You can move from column to column in the editing grid by pressing the TAB
key. As you move, JAWS and Window-Eyes will announce the position of the cursor
within the grid. The contents of each cell, as well as cursor location and cell
contents, is also displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the main window.
The status bar is comprised of four panels. When you are working in the
header section, the panels display the following information:
Panel 1: System information and prompts
Panel 2: Header area
Panel 3: Field name
Panel 4: Field contents
When you are working in the editing grid, the panels display the following
information:
Panel 1: System information and prompts
Panel 2: Vertical coordinate (i.e., the timecode)
Panel 3: Horizontal coordinate (i.e., the column name)
Panel 4: Cell contents (i.e., the caption or audio description text)
As you enter text and timecodes into the grid, all information is made
available to the status bar. To hear this information, use your screen reader to
query the status bar. Advanced screen-reader users may want to create frames to
read status panels separately. Currently, all four status panels are read
consecutively. (JAWS 3.5 will also announce the contents of each cell as you tab
through the grid.)
Additionally, if you have the Microsoft SAPI and Direct Text-to-Speech engines
installed, MAGpie will voice the contents of the current cell. To hear this
speech output, simply place the cursor in the appropriate cell and press
CTRL+F12.
All of MAGpie's menu options are accessible from the keyboard. In addition to
opening menus using the standard ALT key, MAGpie makes use of the following
keyboard shortcuts:
- New Stream: CTRL+N
- Open Stream: CTRL+0
- Save Stream: CTRL+S
- Print: CTRL+P
- Cut: CTRL+X
- Copy: CTRL+C
- Paste: CTRL+V
- Select All: CTRL+A
- Delete Event: SHIFT+Delete
- Grab Timecode: F9
- Insert Erasure: F10
You can control the cursor using the following commands:
- CTRL+up arrow: move up one cell
- CTRL+down arrow: move down one cell
- CTRL+right arrow: move right one cell
- CTRL+left arrow: move left one cell.
Note that JAWS may conflict with these CTRL+arrow commands and render them
unusable.
You can control the media player from the keyboard using the following
commands:
- Pause: F5
- Play: F6
- Stop: F7
- Jog Backward: F11
- Jog Forward: F12
- Jog Backward by 5 seconds: CTRL+SHIFT+F11
- Jog Forward by 5 seconds: CTRL+SHIFT+F12
- Sync Player to Stream: F4
- Sync Stream to Player: SHIFT+F4
Important note: The first time you run a project in MAGpie, make sure to
minimize the player. When you quit the current MAGpie session, the state of the
player is saved (in this case, as minimized) and will open in this same state the
next time your run MAGpie. This will obviate focus problems when using a
screen reader.
